About Clear Flue

Family-run chimney care for Buffalo and Western New York — sixteen years, one standard: done right.

Clear Flue crew on a job in Buffalo
16 yearsOne standard: done right

Our Story

Started with one van, a rotary brush, and a stubborn work ethic.

Clear Flue began in the winter of 2009, when Ray Kowalski — a South Buffalo ironworker tired of watching neighbors get burned by shoddy chimney work — bought a used van, a rotary brush, and a box of drop cloths. The first year he swept 140 chimneys and didn't spend a dollar on advertising. He didn't need to.

Sixteen years later we're a small crew of certified sweeps covering Erie and Niagara counties, but the rules haven't changed: inspect everything, photograph everything, quote flat before work begins, and leave the living room cleaner than we found it.

We're not a franchise, a call center, or a roofing company that "also does chimneys." Chimneys are the whole job — and your family's safety is the whole point.

"If we wouldn't put our own family in front of your fireplace, the job isn't done."

— Ray & the Clear Flue crew

Our Values

What we stand for on every roofline in Buffalo.

Four rules, printed on the inside of every van door. They've cost us jobs and won us customers — we're fine with the trade.

See how we work

Safety before sales

We inspect to NFPA 211 standards on every visit. If your chimney is safe, we say so and leave it alone — even if you were ready to spend.

Plain-English reports

Photo-documented findings with a clear verdict: safe, serviceable, or needs work. No jargon, no scare tactics, no mystery line items.

Spotless by guarantee

Negative-pressure HEPA containment on every sweep. If soot escapes into your home, the visit is free — it's written on the invoice.

We live here, we work here, and our reputation walks the same grocery-store aisles yours does. We sweep like it.

Questions, Answered

The things Buffalo homeowners actually ask us — pricing, mess, frequency, and what creosote really is.

The NFPA recommends at least once a year, or any time there's 1/8 inch of soot or creosote buildup. If you burn regularly through a Buffalo winter, we suggest an annual sweep in spring or summer — you'll beat the fall rush and start the season clean.

Watch for smoky fires or trouble getting a draft, a strong "campfire" odor on humid days, white staining (efflorescence) on the exterior brick, crumbling mortar, debris or animal sounds in the flue, and shiny black tar inside the firebox. Any one of these is worth a phone call.

A standard sweep with inspection runs 45–90 minutes. A Level 2 inspection with video scan can take up to 90 minutes. Repairs vary by project — we'll give you a realistic timeline with your written estimate.

No. We seal the fireplace opening with a negative-pressure HEPA containment system, lay floor-to-hearth drop cloths, and wear boot covers. Our mess-free guarantee is printed on every invoice: if soot escapes, the visit is free.

Sweeps start at $199 and inspections at $129, both flat-rate and approved by you before any work begins. Repairs get a free written estimate. No "while we're up there" upsells — if your chimney is fine, we tell you it's fine.

Yes. We clean and inspect gas log sets and direct-vent fireplaces, and we check furnace and water-heater flues for proper draft, blockages, and corrosion — especially important on older Buffalo housing stock with shared chimneys.

Creosote is the tar-like byproduct of burning wood. It condenses inside the flue in three stages — flaky soot, crunchy tar, and hardened glaze — and it's the fuel for most chimney fires. Stage one and two brush out; stage three requires professional chemical treatment. Either way, it's the number one reason annual sweeps matter.

Fully. We carry $2M in general liability plus workers' compensation, and certificates are available on request. Every technician is background-checked and trained to CSIA standards.

All of Buffalo — including Elmwood Village, Allentown, North and South Buffalo, Black Rock, and Riverside — plus Kenmore, Tonawanda, Amherst, Williamsville, Cheektowaga, West Seneca, Lackawanna, Depew, Grand Island, and most of Erie and Niagara Counties. Same-week appointments in most areas.

Three easy things: don't burn a fire for 24 hours before we arrive, clear a five-foot workspace around the hearth, and secure curious pets. We handle everything else, including the cleanup.
